, your thoughts on this. i mean, isn't this harry reid's fault? harry had a chance to change the rules of the senate and he was too nice to mitch mcconnell and now look what we've got. there's probably more to come. your thoughts. >> i suppose so, though i remember not very long ago when we were all suffering under the george w. bush administration and there was a real fear that without the filibuster then george bush would have been able to put some of his very radical extremists on the bench and push through more of his agenda. so i understand the reticence to kind of unleash the nuclear option. and you know, i don't think you can necessarily blame harry reid for the unprecedented not just obstructionism but kind of paranoid lunacy of this new crop of senators who, you know, before i think we used to see this sort of incredibly paranoid mccarthyite apocalyptic view of american foreign policy among some of the characters in the house -- >> doesn't that make the case for why harry should have done, this because of the ted cruzes of the world and the tea parties of the world? they're tr

of questions about whether democratic legislators up to and including harry reid would support what the president wants to do when t comes to gun control. >> that is a good question, jon. in the political calculus that is pretty simple. you have democrats that could be embarrassed if forced take a vote on guns. like assault weapons ban, et cetera. those are in conservative states or in the house in conservative districts may have been carried by mitt romney and they're holding on by a thread. we're talking about whether or not senate majority leader harry reid is willing to put those democrats at risk and also then put at risk control of the senate because republicans have fewer people who were running, who will be running in 14 and fewer people who are at risk. though again, the dynamic is very difficult for the democrats and here's a vote that would expose them to great political costs. jon: let's take, let's take another listen at one of the things the president said last night. >> and i know you want these job-creating projects in your district. i've seen all those ribbon cuttin

sticky is once the committee sends it to the full senate and harry reid just a couple of minutes ago said he'd like to take the vote this week but the republican leader says it is possible there could be some delays to give opportunity for more information. sort of a slow walking. it's not a filibuster threat just yet. it's unclear how it will go. they don't want to show their hand but some of the resistance of republicans is they don't feel that chuck hagel explained enough about the financial arrangements since he left the senate, concerns about his views, concerns about the performance at his nomination hearing where he had some, you know, rough back and forth that we all watched. so the white house has told us that they believe the numbers are there for hagel to get the job at the pentagon. but there are a couple of steps that need to go forward, a critical one this afternoon likely to pass the committee. the rest of the story on hagel unfolding in a few days but we don't know what republicans will do. >> all right. kelly, thank you very much. we'll bring the audience the update as so

at the beginning of the day we didn't think that harry reid would get any republican votes, and he's actually secured quite a few. >> actually not a surprise. not a surprise because most republicans will say a president has the right to choose his own nominees. they believe that so that when the president is from their party, that holds true. what happened here is that hagel's performance at his hearing and some of the questions that have come up, some of the unanswered questions, have dragged that out. there are two factions of republicans who have slowed this down. a group focused solely on hagel wanting more information and that includes the new texas senator ted cruz who has been particularly critical of hagel in raising questions about his ties to foreign groups that might have provided him some salary during the years sips he left the senate. that's been very harsh questioning. on the other hand, there was a small faction of mccain, graham, and ayotte, who wanted more information about benghazi. i just spoke to them, and they said they believe that taking the stand was very effective. t

out on this question, i agree with senator harry reid. when it came to the nomination of john bold, and in a of members of this body asked for additional disclosures from john bolton, and those disclosures were not forthcoming. harry reid said the following, the administration stonewalling has no one had the effect of slowing down the confirmation process, it has also put a further cloud over this individual and perhaps unnecessarily, raised the impression that the nominee and the white house have something to hide. i don't know if mr. hagel has received funds directly or indirectly from foreign sources, from extreme sources, but his refusal to provide disclosure i think is highly troubling. and i would suggest every member of this committee and every member of this body should stand together and at least insisting on adequate disclosure. i'll make one final point. some have asked, would you make the same request of a republican nominee? i'll point out you can chuck hagel is a republican. i don't know him personally, unlike many members of this committee. isa limit was record, and
